Statement from the New York Legal Services Coalition on the Appointment of Senator Luis Sepúlveda as Senate Judiciary Chair
ALBANY, NY (January 13, 2026) – The New York Legal Services Coalition, a statewide organization representing civil legal services providers throughout New York State, released the following statement from President Kristin Brown on the appointment of Senator Luis Sepúlveda as Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee:
“On behalf of civil legal services providers across New York State, I congratulate Senator Luis Sepúlveda on being selected to serve as Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. As the first Latino to hold this position, Senator Sepúlveda’s appointment is a historic milestone that reflects the diversity of the communities most impacted by the justice system.
“Senator Sepúlveda assumes this role at a moment when civil legal services are more important than ever for New Yorkers facing housing instability, immigration enforcement, and barriers to accessing basic benefits.
“Across the state, civil legal services help families stay housed, protect the rights of immigrant communities, and navigate increasingly complex legal systems during times of economic and political uncertainty. Demand for these services continues to grow, even as providers face rising costs and capacity challenges.
“The New York Legal Services Coalition looks forward to working with Chair Sepúlveda to support civil legal services providers and strengthen access to justice for communities in every region of the state.”
